Where to surf in the UK
Blighty definitely gets some stick in the surfing world - go anywhere and the response is the same… ’you guys get surf in England ?’ Then again perhaps this anonymity is a blessing in disguise as (between you and me) Britain harbours some of the surfs best kept secrets.
Only last month surfers from all corners of the globe looked on in envy as their boarding buds from the UK were blessed with what most would call “awesome swell, dude”. Surf enthusiasts b-lined for Ireland where waves reached heights of 14m.
Granted the UK is not always super swells and perfect barrels - the sea is a tad chilly and the waves can be somewhat unreliable - but the committed few that will not give up on the British waters live to reap the benefits. Those that do stick feverishly to this addictive pastime are blessed with riding the occasional gem – kindly provided by our Atlantic Ocean, North Sea or English Channel.
What the urban dwellers among us may forget is that we are an Island and as such no British city is more than two hours from the nearest stretch of coast. Beach is available for all – no need even to jump in a nasty plane so us lucky Brits can keep a clear conscience as we pursue those perfect waves.
With this in mind there are no excuses - good waves are out there waiting to be ridden, the beaches are as accessible as you could wish and on top of all this winter is the season for UK surf. What are you waiting for – grab a board and head to any of the below for the ride of your life.
