Waterskiing Essential Information & Most Frequently Asked Questions

Below for Madforsport.com, 24 time Irish National Waterski Champion Barry Galvin of The Cork Powerboat and Waterski Club goes throug the most frequently asked questions about Waterskiing:

1. What is the best way to start in Waterskiing?

At the start to try out the sport it is best to get a beginner lesson or two from an Irish Waterski and Wakeboard Federation (IWWF) affiliated club such as The Cork Powerboat and Waterski Club or those listed on Madforsport.com.

2. Do you need to be able to swim to waterski?

Life jackets will be provided at waterskiing course providers so you do not have to be a swimmer to start. However being comfortable in water will help with your confidence on the board and help you to get more from your waterskiing lessons.

3. How long does it typically take to master the basis skills of waterskiing?

What you can expect to be doing after the first lesson – master balancing on the Ski’s and a few falls.

4. Is there a structured Waterskiing training programme/ courses?

All the clubs offer tuition, we hope to role out a structured programme thgis year.

5. Are there waterskiing competitions in Ireland for Adults/ Juniors?

There are approximately 6 waterski competitions during the summer and about 4 Wakeboard events .

6. How do you get involved competitively in Waterskiing?

Practice….. Practice…..Practice….. The people in the clubs will encourage you into a completion when you are ready.

7. What kind of Waterskiing Equipment should the beginner go for?

I would only buy equipment when you are sure that this is the sport for you and you want to progress in. Waterskiing equipment is expensive and the option of second hand equipment should also be considered.
I go into more detail on the types of skis, ropes & boats and where they can be sourced in the Waterskiing Equipment article

8. Where are the best waterskiing locations in Ireland?

In the South of Ireland we generally get the best weather , we also have some of the best set up clubs in the country, Cork Powerboat & Waterski Club has all the facilities needed and more including a Sauna for the après ski.
